Dubai International Airport (DXB) has announced its participation in Airports of Tomorrow, a joint initiative by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Airports Council International (ACI), as COP28 commences in Dubai. The aim of this partnership is to work towards achieving Net Zero carbon emissions in the aviation industry by 2050, with a focus on critical areas such as energy, infrastructure, and financing.

Sven Deckers, Director of Strategy Planning at Dubai Airports, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing environmental sustainability challenges in the aviation industry. Deckers stated, “This is a collective effort where all airports are united in a race against time. Together, we’re committed to achieving a net-zero future for the aviation industry.”

Prior to COP28, a delegation from the Airports of Tomorrow community visited key facilities at DXB, including the airport’s 140km baggage handling system and the installation of a 15,000-panel solar energy system at Terminal 2.

DXB’s sustainability initiatives include diverting 60% of waste generated at its facilities away from landfills, converting 100% of waste cooking oil into biodiesel, and integrating electric ground operations vehicles. Additionally, the airport has undergone facility upgrades for enhanced energy efficiency and replaced conventional lights with energy-efficient LED fixtures, further highlighting its environmental commitment.

With these efforts, Dubai International Airport is determined to lead the way in sustainability and environmental responsibility within the aviation industry.
