Gulf Countries Propose Single Schengen-Type Tourist Visa to Boost Visitor Numbers

The idea of implementing a single Schengen-type tourist visa for Gulf countries has been put forward as part of a plan to enhance tourism in the region. This initiative aims to further boost visitor numbers to the bloc and supports the integration of tourism strategies among the GCC countries.

Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE Minister of Economy, emphasized the importance of supporting tourism across the region. He stated, “Supporting tourism in any GCC country is considered supporting tourism in all GCC countries.”

Currently, about 70% of visitors to the Emirates are international tourists, while domestic tourism accounts for the remaining 30%. The tourism sector in the country has experienced continuous growth, thanks to the availability of necessary elements and support infrastructure.

The contribution of the tourism and aviation sectors to the UAE’s gross domestic product has reached 30%. Al Marri highlighted that the 2-1/2-day weekend system in the Emirates has greatly contributed to the growth of the tourism, hospitality, and retail industries.

The UAE aims to achieve a 7% growth in GDP and double the size of its economy to $3 trillion by 2030. This ambitious goal requires substantial growth in all sectors of the economy.

Abdullah Al Zaabi, CEO of Miral Group, revealed that the entertainment cities on Yas Island experienced an impressive 85% increase in the number of visitors last summer compared to the same period in 2022. He attributed this success to exceptional levels of performance in terms of guest numbers and hotel occupancy.

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Tourist Attractions expects spending by visitors in the UAE’s important tourism sector to reach $609 million, marking a 128% increase compared to four years ago when spending was $266 million.

Al Zaabi highlighted the transformation of Yas Island into a global destination that attracts tourists from around the world. He emphasized that Yas Island offers a range of entertainment and business tourism experiences.

Furthermore, the hospitality sector in the Middle East and Africa region is currently witnessing remarkable growth and major expansions.

The proposal for a single Schengen-type tourist visa for Gulf countries aligns with the region’s effort to promote tourism and attract more visitors. The integration of tourism strategies among the GCC countries will play a vital role in achieving these goals and boosting economic growth.
