The 52nd UAE National Day is just around the corner, but before the festivities begin, it’s time to honor National Flag Day. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the concept, which has been celebrated on November 3 every year since 2013. National Flag Day was introduced by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as a way to pay tribute to the country’s past, present, and future.

Although it is not a public holiday, Flag Day kickstarts the National Day celebrations in the UAE. Residents proudly display the UAE flag outside their homes, offices, and shops. Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, emphasized the significance of Flag Day as a unifying national occasion. She stated that the flag represents the nation’s values, loyalty, and sense of belonging.

To commemorate Flag Day, we spoke to several Emiratis about their earliest memories of the celebrations and what the flag means to them. Muna AlJallaf, a resident in the AlGhadeer community, described the pride she feels seeing the neighborhood adorned with flags. Maryam Almansoori expressed her excitement in preparing her clothes for the occasion. Hessa Lootah reminisced about celebrating Flag Day on her family’s farm. Meera Almazrooei talked about dressing up in the colors of the flag and discussing their symbolic meaning with her classmates. Noora Almarzouqi recalled the joy of decorating her school with friends.

The UAE flag is a symbol of nationalism, independence, and sovereignty. It represents peace, security, and happiness in all national, religious, official, and public events. The flag was designed by Abdulla Mohammed Al Ma’enah, inspired by a poem describing the nation’s actions, landscapes, battles, and swords. Emiratis have personal interpretations of what the flag means to them. Maryam sees it as a reminder of her true identity, while Meera describes it as a symbol of power and solidarity. Hessa finds in it loyalty, home, unity, and strength. Noora believes it represents the courage, defeat of enemies, and strength of the mind.

Food is an important aspect of any celebration, and Flag Day is no different. Restaurants like Parlour Boutique have created special dishes inspired by the colors of the flag. Their Heritage Hues Collection includes macarons and a date pudding, representative of the UAE’s flag colors. These unique delicacies are available throughout November for both dine-in and delivery.
