Dubai Resident Aims to Break World Record and Raise Funds for Cancer Treatment

Dubai resident, Jimmy Wright, is gearing up for an incredible challenge as he prepares to embark on a 600km journey from Saudi Arabia to the UAE. His aim is to establish a new Guinness World Record for cycling and raise Dh1 million funds for cancer treatment. The current record stands at 1 day, 17 hours, and 47 minutes, but Wright is confident that he is ready to take on the challenge.

While breaking the world record is certainly a motivation for Wright, his primary objective is to raise awareness and funds for the treatment of children battling cancer. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Wright said, “This endeavor represents an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the young patients, and I am deeply committed to this noble cause through Al Jalila Foundation.” All funds raised will be donated to the Dubai-based foundation, with a focus on assisting children with terminal or life-threatening cancer.

Wright’s personal journey with cancer has been a driving force behind his fundraising efforts. Two years ago, his wife, Abbie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, she recently received the news that she is cancer-free. This triumphant milestone in her battle against cancer has served as a powerful reminder of the importance of their fundraising efforts.

It was during his wife’s battle with cancer that Wright had a moment of epiphany. He and Abbie were trying to explain to their three children what their mother was going through, and this led him to think about parents whose children were battling cancer. Inspired by their strength, Wright decided to take action and came up with the fundraising project.

To prepare for this extraordinary challenge, Wright underwent a rigorous three-month training program. His training regimen included a combination of long, steady rides and high-intensity sessions to enhance his physical fitness and endurance. With his focus on the children battling cancer and the urgent need for their treatment, Wright intends to draw strength and inspiration that will drive him to surpass the current record.

His goal is to collect Dh1 million, which will help extend treatment for approximately 20 children suffering from cancer. Wright emphasizes that every penny raised will go towards the extension of treatment, ensuring that these children receive the care they need. He has already received outstanding support from various organizations and institutions, including Brighton College Dubai, where his children attend school. The school conducted a “run for a reason” event that raised over Dh19,000 in support of Wright’s project.

Wright is now ready to take on the record-breaking journey next week. He acknowledges that there will undoubtedly be challenging moments during the journey, but he draws inspiration from his wife’s courageous battle with cancer and the well-being of his children. The children for whom he is raising funds will also serve as a constant source of motivation.

“The children will remind me of the critical importance of this mission,” says Wright. “I am resolute in my determination to attain my goal, and I will devote my full effort to it. While unforeseen challenges may arise, my commitment remains unwavering, and I will persevere to the best of my ability.”

This extraordinary feat of courage and determination is a testament to the power of individuals to make a difference in the lives of others. With his record-breaking journey, Jimmy Wright is not only aiming to accomplish a personal goal but also to bring hope and support to children battling cancer.
