Samsung Electronics has announced it will launch a new real-time call translation service using AI technology. This service is expected to be incorporated into its new flagship Galaxy model scheduled for an early next year launch. Samsung has said that the translation will be enabled even if the call partner uses a non-Samsung smartphone.
The company emphasized that the new model will use “on-device AI technology” and a spokesman emphasized that it has not been determined how many languages will be supported. Additionally, the feature will allow real-time translation in audio and text while the callers are on the line. Samsung claims it will be as simple as turning on closed captions on streaming shows and private conversations will be safely locked in on the phones.
The firm sees it as a step towards a significant achievement and sign of real technological progress if it pulls off real-time translation of voice calls. However, analysts suggest they will have to wait and see whether the translated contents will be spoken in an AI voice or the original voice.
Samsung has been focusing on developing its generative AI model called Samsung Gauss. This model comes in three fields of language, code, and image and will be incorporated into the company’s wide range of products in the near future. Samsung’s AI aims at helping with everything from composing emails to summarizing documents and will also be able to convert low-resolution images to high-resolution while generating and editing images.
As governments and watchdogs have raised alarms about data privacy and disinformation, US President Joe Biden last month issued an executive order on regulating AI. Samsung has announced that its GalaxyAI will run on its devices and “private conversations never leave your phone”.
