Dubai Authorities Have Issued Over 63,500 E-scooter Permits Since April 2022
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has provided more than 63,500 e-scooter permits following the requirement that came into effect in April 2022. These permits allow riders to utilize e-scooters in specified districts and streets.
The permits are available to individuals 16 years and above after completing training and awareness courses found on the RTA website. However, those with valid driving licenses are exempt from undergoing these courses.
An awareness campaign has also been launched by the RTA in collaboration with the Dubai Police to educate riders about the importance of adhering to safety regulations.
In 2023, the authorities have engaged with 3,000 cyclists and e-scooter riders to inform them about traffic regulations and safety requirements, as well as provide tips to prevent accidents.
The Dubai Police revealed that there have been five e-scooter accident fatalities and 29 injuries in 2023. Over 10,000 fines have been issued to riders who violated traffic regulations.
Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA, stated that the latest campaign has been introduced in anticipation of the rise in the use of bicycles and e-scooters during the winter season.
Users are reminded by Al Ali to adhere to the designated speed limits, which vary based on the area. Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, emphasized the importance of safety protocols, including the use of helmets and reflective vests for riders.
The authorities intend to reduce violations and accidents involving e-scooters and bicycles through educating riders about safety regulations and conducting awareness campaigns. This includes the requirement to wear helmets, use reflective vests, and install lights for visibility, in addition to equipping bikes and e-scooters with fully functional brakes.
With traffic authorities and police working together, the aim is for Dubai’s roads to become safer for all users.
