A new survey conducted by the Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi revealed that almost a third of women over 40 years old have never had a routine mammogram screening.

Of the more than 400 women over 40 surveyed, it was found that only 66% had undergone all the recommended routine check-ups suggested by their doctors. A shocking 34% had never booked a mammogram, with the number jumping to 46% in Sharjah.

Dr. Aisha Alsalami, an SSMC medical oncologist, highlighted the contradiction between women’s health aspirations and their attitudes toward screenings, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups for early cancer detection. Early detection can lead to more effective treatment and increase the chances of survival.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the UAE, accounting for almost half of all diagnosed cases. Despite this, women are quicker to book beauty services, holidays, and car services than a mammogram.

SSMC has taken steps to increase awareness and combat these barriers to screening. They have formed an all-female team to provide comfort and enhance patient experience for women undergoing cancer screenings and tests. The hospital also houses the latest diagnostic technologies and treatment techniques for breast cancer.

This campaign raises awareness about early detection and aims to increase regular screening in women over 40. SSMC is dedicated to delivering compassionate, integrated care through the latest innovations and a team of multidisciplinary medical experts.

SSMC, a partnership between Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) and the Mayo Clinic in the US, is one of the UAE’s largest hospitals for serious and complex care.

The survey has revealed the need for a deeper focus on breast cancer awareness and screening in the UAE. Dr. Alsalami’s words highlight the urgency in addressing the contradiction between what women aspire to and what they practice when it comes to their health.
