IRENA, a UN-affiliated agency focused on renewable energy, has recently signed an agreement with DP World Group, a global logistics company, to promote urgent climate action. The agreement was signed by IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera and DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

DP World has committed to advocating for more urgent climate action and leveraging its influence to bring together the supply chain industry to develop long-term solutions. The company aims to become carbon neutral by 2040 and net zero carbon by 2050. This commitment was announced at COP 27 last year, where DP World also joined the Green Shipping Challenge and pledged to invest up to $500 million to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 700,000 tonnes over the next five years.

The company’s long-term strategy involves electrifying operations, pioneering low-carbon fuel use, and exploring solutions such as carbon-neutral synthetic natural gas. DP World has partnered with the Maersk McKinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and joined the UN Global Compact’s Think Lab on Just Transition.

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera commended DP World’s efforts, stating that the maritime sector remains one of the most challenging industries to decarbonize. He praised DP World’s innovative use of smart electrification and its role in spearheading the shift towards renewables and improvements in energy efficiency across ports and maritime logistics operations.

The collaboration between IRENA and DP World signifies a significant step towards achieving a greener future and setting new standards for sustainable trade on a global scale.
