Tamil superstar Rajinikanth is set to reunite with his mentor, legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, as they share screen space in the upcoming film Thalaivar 170. Directed by T J Gnanavel, this collaboration marks their first film together in 33 years.
Expressing his excitement, Rajinikanth took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a picture of himself with Amitabh Bachchan and wrote, “After 33 years, I am working again with my mentor, the phenomenon, Shri Amitabh Bachchan in the upcoming Lyca’s ‘Thalaivar 170’ directed by T J Gnanavel. My heart is thumping with joy.”
The last film the duo appeared in together was Hum, released in 1991 and directed by Mukul Anand. Their previous collaborations include Andhaa Kaanoon (1983) and Geraftaar (1985).
Thalaivar 170 boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, Rakshan, and GM Soundar. The film is backed by Lyca Productions, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
In an interview with PTI, Rajinikanth revealed that his 170th film with director Gnanavel and Lyca Productions will be a big entertainer with a social message. The title for the movie is yet to be decided.
Rajinikanth was last seen in Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer, while Amitabh Bachchan appeared in Tiger Shroff’s Ganapath and has upcoming projects including Kalki 2898 AD with Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, as well as The Intern, a Hindi adaptation of the Hollywood film featuring Anne Hathaway and Robert de Niro. Amitabh and Deepika previously worked together in Piku.
