Dubai Commuters to Soon Enjoy Touchless Journey on Metro with Facial Recognition Technology
Dubai, UAE – Soon, commuters in Dubai will be able to travel on the Metro without the need for a physical or digital nol card, thanks to the introduction of smart gates equipped with facial recognition technology. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) showcased this cutting-edge technology at the ongoing Gitex Global exhibition, the world’s largest technology and startup event, on Monday.
The facial recognition system operates seamlessly and quickly, clearing the gates in under five seconds. Users simply need to look at the 3D camera, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which will authenticate their facial features and bio-data. Salahaldeen AlMarzooqi, the director of Automated Collection Systems at RTA, revealed that the smart gates will be rolled out next year after undergoing testing at stations with lower passenger volumes.
This innovative facial recognition technology will also be implemented in other modes of public transportation in Dubai, including trams, buses, abras, and taxis. AlMarzooqi emphasized that this technological advancement is part of their ongoing efforts to digitize services and provide a seamless journey for the public.
Registering for the facial recognition system is simple – users need to provide their bio data, and the smart camera will scan their face to validate their identity at entry points, automatically opening the gate. However, commuters must ensure they have sufficient balance in their e-wallet or digital nol card for automatic fare deduction.
The RTA has already implemented facial recognition at its headquarters in Al Garhoud, eliminating the need for employees and staff to use IDs or fingerprints for entry. Passengers at Dubai Airports will soon enjoy a touchless travel experience with the introduction of a biometrics and facial recognition system later this year.
The trials for this system are currently underway at Dubai International Airport. In addition to streamlining the transportation process, facial recognition technology offers enhanced security and convenience for commuters in Dubai.
This new development in Dubai’s transportation infrastructure marks another milestone in the city’s journey toward becoming a leader in smart city initiatives. With its commitment to technological advancements, Dubai continues to set a benchmark for other cities worldwide.
