Cricket and cinema, two of India’s beloved pastimes, often intersect in Bollywood. However, despite the popularity of cricket in the country and the inspiring stories of real-life players, Bollywood has struggled to capture the magic of cricket on screen. Most attempts at ‘cricket films’ have fallen flat, leaving audiences disappointed. Even big star vehicles have failed to deliver nuanced storytelling. One of the earliest cricket-themed movies, Love Marriage (1959), started off with promise but quickly veered into a cliched Bollywood love story, sidelining the sport. It would be three decades before another ‘cricket film’ was made. The 1983 World Cup victory should have inspired more movies about cricket, but instead, the first post-victory film, All Rounder (1984), was a mediocre affair with a predictable plot and mandatory love story. The most glaring blunder in the cricket-themed movie genre is Awwal Number (1990), starring Dev Anand. The film combines cricket, terrorism, and police work in a bizarre plot that defies logic. These movies reduce cricket, deeply ingrained in Indian culture, to masala entertainment with over-the-top sequences and cliches. It is evident that little research or effort is put into creating realistic portrayals of the sport. Dil Bole Hadippa (2009) and Patiala House (2011) are examples of films that failed to deliver compelling cricket stories, instead relying on absurd plotlines and worn-out stereotypes. Even biopics like Azhar (2016), based on former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin’s life, took creative liberties and failed to provide an accurate portrayal of his controversial past. The Zoya Factor, a recent release, further proves that Bollywood’s attempts at cricket films often miss the mark. Despite being a cricket-crazy nation, India has yet to see a successful cricket-themed film. While it may be disappointing, these movies are a source of amusement and laughter for audiences. It remains to be seen if Bollywood will reconsider making cricket movies in the future.
