Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the renowned actor known for her critically acclaimed women-centric Hindi films, expressed her thoughts on the collective failure experienced when a female-led film does not succeed. Speaking at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023, Chopra stated that there is immense pressure on such films, as they are still relatively few in number. While the successes of female-led films have been increasing, the failure of one film feels like a setback for all women. Chopra emphasized the importance of making these opportunities count, as there are only a limited number of them available.

Recalling her own experience with the film Fashion, which celebrated its 15th anniversary, Chopra revealed that she was advised against doing female-led films early in her career. However, the script resonated with her, and she dedicated six months to prepare for her character, Meghna Mathur. Through this experience, Chopra learned the significance of deeply understanding and immersing herself in a character before stepping onto the set.

Fashion had a significant impact on Chopra’s perspective on acting, prompting her to seek formal training. She attended classes with acting stalwarts Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur, who taught her to focus on understanding her character’s emotions and bringing improvisation to the scene. These insights allowed Chopra to bring her own unique contribution as an actor.

Having made her mark in Hollywood with projects like Quantico and films such as Baywatch and The Matrix Resurrections, Chopra aims to build a diverse filmography in the English language. She expressed her desire to explore different opportunities and challenge herself, hoping to find roles that allow her to showcase her talent as she did in Hindi cinema.

Chopra also discussed the pressures of living in a social media-driven world, acknowledging that it can consume individuals entirely. She emphasized the importance of not being swayed by public opinion on platforms like Twitter, as real connections and impact are made offline. Chopra concluded by saying that one’s legacy is defined by their actions and not by the external judgments of others.

With her insightful thoughts and experiences, Priyanka Chopra Jonas highlighted the struggles and aspirations of women in the film industry while emphasizing the need for more female-led films and meaningful roles.
