The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is embarking on a major new project to install solar energy panels at key infrastructure locations within the city. These installations will take place at the Dubai Metro Depots at Jebel Ali and Al Qusais, as well as the Tram Depot at Al Safouh.
The project, projected to be completed by the first quarter of 2024, is expected to generate a total of 9,959 megawatts of solar power. These efforts align with the Dubai Government’s “Shams Dubai” initiative and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy, which aim to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
The installation of solar panels represents a significant step towards RTA’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The focus on three primary sectors: public transportation, buildings and related facilities, and waste management, underscores RTA’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project is also expected to yield cost savings, resource conservation, and improved operational efficiency. A particular focus will be placed on series of solar panels that are expected to save up to 3,962 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
This initiative by the RTA has gained attention and recognition, having been honored at the MEP Middle East Awards, a prestigious event that celebrates excellence in mechanical and electrical engineering projects. Moreover, the solar panel installations also include a long-term maintenance program designed to ensure the continued efficiency and productivity of these sustainable energy systems.
These solar installations are a clear indication of Dubai’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking project from the Roads and Transport Authority.
