Srettha, Thailand’s prime minister since August, has recognized tourism as a key component in accelerating the nation’s economic growth. The government has taken measures to boost tourism, such as waiving visa requirements for visitors from Russia, China, Kazakhstan, India, and Taiwan, and directing airlines to increase their routes. Additionally, the administration plans to extend the operating hours for nightlife entertainment venues in specific areas, including Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Chonburi, to operate until 4 a.m. starting next month.
While Thailand has lifted most pandemic-related restrictions on visitors, the average spending per tourist has not yet reached pre-Covid levels and has fallen short of official estimates. In 2019, the country saw a record of nearly 40 million foreign arrivals, generating 1.91 trillion baht in revenue. During that year, tourists spent an average of 47,895 baht per trip, which lasted nine days on average, according to official data. As of November 12 this year, Thailand has welcomed 23.2 million foreign tourists and received 981.7 billion baht in foreign tourist receipts. This currently represents a 12% decrease from the 2019 per-trip spending benchmark.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is aiming to restore foreign tourism revenue to pre-Covid levels, with a target of at least 2 trillion baht ($57 billion) in 2024.
To further encourage tourism, Srettha announced the “Winter Festival” celebrations, which will feature the Loi Krathong festival, Bangkok Marathon, and New Year festivities. This event aims to showcase Thailand’s unique culture and attract tourists during the high season from November to January.
Prommin, the secretary-general to the premier, stated, “We will design more attractions and promotions to incentivize tourists to stay longer. Longer stays, more events to attract them, and more nightlife entertainment. This is how we’re planning for tourists to spend more.”
