WhatsApp Introduces New Feature Allowing Users to Log in via Email

In a recent update, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows some users to link their email addresses to the messaging app. This Meta-owned platform typically requires users to access the app using their registered mobile numbers but will now let iOS users log in using their email as well. Importantly, this feature will not make the email address visible to other contacts, allowing for discreet access to WhatsApp when users do not have their phone in hand.

Once an email address is linked to a WhatsApp account, users will receive a verification code via email, offering an alternative method for accessing the app during times of network glitches or technical issues where SMS delivery is interrupted. Despite the addition of the new login option, WhatsApp will maintain the use of phone numbers as the primary identifier for user accounts.

The rollout of this feature is part of the latest update to iOS, version 2.23.24.70, where users are prompted to add their email addresses to their accounts on the messaging platform. The app displays a message notifying users that the email will help them access their account, with assurances that it remains invisible to others.

To complete the verification process, WhatsApp will send a code to the linked email address, which users can enter to confirm the association between their email and the app. To link an email to their WhatsApp account, users should ensure they have the latest version of WhatsApp from the App Store, install the update, and navigate to the settings to add their email address under the Account and Email Address section.

While the new feature is currently available on iOS, there is no confirmation of when Android users can expect to receive it. Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly testing a standalone messenger app for iPad, allowing users to link their phone number to the iPad through a multi-device support feature.
